Mr. John Wayne Overbaugh, 65, passed his final mile marker and went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 17, 2023, after a long, courageous fight at his home in Captains Cove Virginia, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born in West Virginia but spent most of his life on his beloved Eastern Shore. Effectively known by his CB handle, Long John, during his many years of trucking on the East Coast, he knew every mile marker from Maryland to Florida. Whether in life or on the road, Long John always knew better ways to navigate obstacles. He never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a hand and help. John had a way of telling a great story and wore a smile on his face.
If one’s life is measured by not what they had but what they gave, John lived a rich and fulfilling life. His legacy left behind are his three children. John not only was an amazing father to his children, he was a grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and mentor to many kids over the years.
Growing up John traveled with his parents, the late Gordon and Nancy Brock of Astoria, Ore., during his high school years living in Germany. John met and married Audrey in El Paso, Texas in 1976. John enrolled in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in June 1977.
Poppie, to his grandchildren, loved teaching and sharing life skills with each of them. He loved spending time with them by fishing and supporting their various activities.
He is survived by the love of his life, Audrey May Overbaugh, formerly of Hebron, Md.; his children, Kortney Kellogg and Jason of Ocean Pines, Md., Joshua Overbaugh and Kim of Astoria, Ore., and Haley Scrimgeour and Harold of Ocala, Fla.; grandchildren, Skylar Kellog, Cloe Kellogg, James Kellogg, Haydyn Scrimgeour, Willa Scrimgeour; and great-grandson, Emmett Kellogg; Aunt Caroline and Uncle Tom Kemp of Indiana; brother, Blane Brock of Arizona; brother-in-law and friend, Thomas Oldenburg of Burke, Va.; mother-in-law, Doris Gravenor of Hebron, Md., and many more extended family.
The family will hold a private celebration of life service at a later date.
