Mr. Elton Stewart James, of Richmond, passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 3, 2025.

He was born in Nassawadox on June 24, 1948.  Elton was the son of the late Levin Smith James Sr. and Rosa Mae Gunter James. Elton is survived by his brother, Levin Smith James Jr.; and his sisters, Rebecca James Leach (Bob), and Rosanna James Gerndt (Bob). Elton was a devoted son to his parents and a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. He is survived by many cousins and friends.

Elton graduated from Northampton High School in 1966 and attended Goldey-Beacom College. He was employed by Phillip Morris for 25 years in the accounting department. After his many years at Phillip Morris, Elton was employed in the accounting department of Ethyl Corporation, which became a subsidiary of NewMarket Corporation in 2004.

While at Phillip Morris, Elton played in the golf league and the bowling league for many years. Also, he played Santa Claus at the Phillip Morris Christmas party for many years.

Elton enjoyed sports as a participant, as a fan, and as a coach. He coached girls basketball teams in youth summer league.

Elton was a fan of University of Virginia sports and loved following the Cavalier teams.  In addition to following college sports, he loved his favorite professional sports teams.

Elton loved playing poker and became a big fan of Texas Hold’em. With several friends, he often participated in trivia contests.

Elton was beloved by many — friends, nieces and nephews, cousins, his brother, and sisters.

A graveside service will be held Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2:30 p.m. at the Franktown Cemetery with the Rev. Robert E. (Pastor Bob) Talbott officiating.
