Mr. Ryan Glenn Mears, a cherished son, brother, uncle, and coach, passed away on Dec. 2, 2024, at his home in Pocomoke City, following a tragic fall. Born on Sept. 6, 1983, in Salisbury, Md., Ryan was the son of Rodney Glenn and Deidra Shumaker Mears.
A graduate of Pocomoke High School, Ryan’s passion for gymnastics was evident from a young age. He furthered his education and athletic career at East Stroudsburg and the University of New Orleans, where he honed his skills and became an exceptional gymnast and trainer. Ryan’s dedication to the sport led him to coach at Beach Bounders Gymnastics. As a member of the USA Gymnastics Club and the Elite program through the NCAA Collegiate Program, he trained with Olympians and shared his love for gymnastics as an inspiring coach and fitness trainer.
He also worked for the family business, T’s Corner in Virginia.
Ryan’s talents on the gymnastics floor were matched by his enthusiasm for life’s many adventures. He had a passion for traveling, exploring new places, and meeting people from all walks of life.
In his professional life, Ryan’s commitment to excellence and his ability to motivate others were unparalleled. He was a mentor to many young athletes, instilling in them the values of hard work, perseverance, and sportsmanship. His legacy as a coach and role model will live on in the hearts and achievements of those he guided.
Above all, Ryan will be remembered for his kind heart, his unwavering positivity, and his ability to bring laughter and light into every room. His presence was a gift to his family, who will forever cherish the memories of his laughter and love.
Ryan is survived by his loving parents, Rodney and Deidra; his sisters, Anne Myers (Jason), of Berlin, Md., and Christie Campbell (Chris), of Salisbury; his niece, Harlow; and his faithful companion, Max. His passing leaves a void in the lives of his family and friends, but they take comfort in knowing that his spirit will continue to inspire and encourage them in all their endeavors.
He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, T. Edward and Carrie Mears, and maternal grandparents, Don and Dixie Shumaker.
A visitation took place Friday, Dec. 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home, 107 Vine St. in Pocomoke City. A graveside service occurred at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Downings United Methodist Church Cemetery in Oak Hall at 11 a.m. A celebration of life followed the service at 1 p.m. at Elks Lodge 1624, Pocomoke City.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the scholarship fund set up in his memory through Beach Bounders.
