Mr. Carlton James Byrd III, 65, of Terre Haute, Ind., passed away on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024. Born on Aug. 22, 1959, in Newmarket, England, he was the son of Carlton James Byrd Jr., of Terre Haute, and the late Ellen Joan Byrd.
Carlton valued three things above all else: God, country, and family. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, and when he lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, he served his community as a volunteer in the Tasley Volunteer Fire Company. Carlton was a hard worker and made sure to take care of his family. He worked as a security guard for Perdue until his health began to fail.
When he wasn’t working, he would hang out with his loving wife, Melinda, and watch the New York Giants run the ball down the field. Soon after, he’d make a call to his son back in Virginia to talk about the game. He will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his father, Carlton is survived by his wife and best friend, Melinda Barnes Byrd, of Terre Haute; son, Carlton J. Byrd IV, of Cape Charles; sister, Sherry Davidson, and her husband, James, of Terre Haute; brothers, Michael Byrd and his wife, Shelly, of Terre Haute, and Robert Byrd, of Knoxville, Tenn.; five nieces; four nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Other than his mother, he was predeceased by four aunts and a nephew.
Funeral services with military honors were conducted from the graveside at the Edgehill Cemetery in Accomac, on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Mike Muender officiating.
Flowers will be accepted, or memorial donations may be made in Carlton’s memory to the Tasley Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 68, Tasley, VA 23441.
