Mr. Robert Donald Umphlett Sr., 79, of Chincoteague Island, passed away on Dec. 10, 2024, at Medstar Georgetown Union Hospital in Washington, D.C. Bobby was born in Nassawaddox on Nov. 16, 1945, to the late Robert Elisha Umphlett and Agnes (Lewis) Umphlett.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Bobby became a master builder for 52 years. He was a well-known decoy carver, winning many ribbons and awards. Bobby mentored many people in the art of carving, fishing, hunting, and clamming. He was a devout Christian who loved his family and his church, Church by the Beach.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Nancy Hagler Umphlett; his son, Robert Umphlett Jr. (Angie); granddaughter, Elaina Midgett (Kyle); grandson, Joel Umphlett; great-grandson, Wyatt Midgett, sisters, Audry Justice and Joyce Reed; and brother-in-law, Tommy Hagler (Judy). He also had special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Myra Umphlett.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 13, at Church by the Beach on Chincoteague Island. Visitation was one hour prior.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Church by the Beach, 5252 Woodland Drive, Chincoteague Island, VA 23336.
