How Do We Save Old Homes?

Dear Editor:

I have ridden my bike past a vacant house for 15 years. I don’t remember it looking lived-in. But it looked solid, and like it had a story. Over the last few years, though, the windows were broken. Finally the front door stood open with an old curtain fluttering in the wind. Local rumor told to me that they couldn’t get tenants who were reliable, so it was left empty and the property was vandalized.

To avoid more problems, it’s being torn down. So many layers of disappointment and waste. How do tenants and landlords (or potential landlords) come together to avoid this? Is there an organization or support service that helps?

Hoping somebody has solutions; having a home is important.
