EASTERN SHORE FAMILY YMCA HOSTS FAMILY FUN DAY

The Kiwanis Club of Accomack is sponsoring Family Fun Day Saturday, September 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  The event will be hosted by the Eastern Shore Family YMCA and will help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the family center in Onley.  It’s an event that supports the idea that kids and families benefit by play and that exercise can be fun. The event is open to everyone. All proceeds benefit the Kiwanis Bring up Grades program and the ESYMCA water safety program.

A variety of activities will be offered throughout the day, providing participants of all ages to learn and take part in fun-filled activities.

Story Time –  The Grouchy Ladybug tells the story of ladybug that won’t say please and thank you.  Follow her on her journey throughout her day and learn about the benefits of friendship and good manners.  Following the story make a ladybug bookmark.  Real-life astronaut, Chis Hadfield inspired by his childhood and fear of the dark authored The Darkest Dark.  The book inspires children to dream the impossible.  Make a paper and straw rocket afterwards.

Pool Time – A variety of activities will take place in the pool.  Race ducks and pool noodle sail boats down a gutter racetrack, make a giant pool bubble, play games in the pool. Free swim tests will be offered with registration fees for swim lessons discounted $10 during the event.

Laps for Literacy –   Children and adults can walk, jog or run laps around the track for literacy.  The goal is 1,460 laps.  After completing laps, participants will be eligible to receive a children’s book.

Dunk Tank – Get your throwing arm in shape.  Eight local personalities will be sitting in the dunk tank for this fun day activity.  Proceeds will benefit the Kiwanis Bring Up Grades program and the Y’s water safety program.  The “quack-tastic” volunteers are Robie Marsh, Pete Duer, Adam James, Kelley Gaskill, Roberta Baldwin, Chassity Parks, Gary Sokaitis and Pete Johnson.

Bubbleball Soccer – Bubbleball soccer is a twist on traditional soccer with players wrapped up in giant inflatable balls.  Watch and enjoy two teams from A&N Electric Cooperative go head to head.

Ducky Derby – Looking for a “spec-quack-u-lar” way to help kids bring up grades and learn to swim. “Join the flock”, adopt a duck and enter the Kwackee Duck Derby.  At 3 p.m. cheer your duck on to victory as it swims the length of the pool with hundreds of other ducks. The first three ducks across the finish line will receive cash prizes. The last duck in will also win a “lone duck” prize. Winners do not need to be present.  Ducks can be adopted at BB&T bank branches, Book Bin and the ESYMCA.

And – Other indoor and outdoor activities include cornhole, bug bingo, twister hopscotch, kids exercise classes with Roberta Baldwin and Sandy Keyes and more.   Concessions by Kiwanis will be available for purchase along with a cake raffle and silent auction.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time.  Locally, the Kiwanis Club of Accomack sponsors the Bring Up Grades (BUG) initiative for third grade students at Accawmacke, Metompkin, Pungoteague and Kegotank elementary schools.
