Mrs. Ann Carter Derby, age 82, passed away at 9:45 a.m. on July 18, 2026.
The daughter of the late Frank and Frances Bernard Carter, Ann grew up in Blairs. She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Landon Derby, whom she married in July 1970.
Ann graduated from Spring Garden High School and from Radford College. She moved to the Eastern Shore in 1967 to work at NASA Wallops Flight Center, where she spent her career in the human resources office. She retired in 1994.
She was a member of Atlantic United Methodist Church, where she served on the church council and the board of trustees.
Survivors include one sister, Joyce Melvin, of Newport News; and one sister-in-law, Virginia, of Blairs. She is also survived by two nieces, Kate Butler and Catherine Melvin-Stokes; four nephews, Mark Haley, Carl Carter, David Carter, and Carter Melvin; and several great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Ruben Bernard Carter (Bessie) and William Frank Carter, and one sister, Mary C. Haley (Dick).
A celebration of life will be conducted at The Chesapeake, 955 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA 23601, at 3 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 1.
