Sep 19, 2025 | Obituaries

Mr. George Robert Semmens passed away on Saturday morning, Sept. 6, after an evening spent with his children, sister, and wife at his home in Cape Charles.

George was born in Springfield, Mass., on May 18, 1955. He attended Fayetteville Manlius High School (Manlius, N.Y.) and graduated with four- and five-year degrees in environmental science and landscape architecture from SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry and Syracuse University.

He owned Semmens Associates, PC, which specialized in the design of schools, universities, athletic fields, museums, health care facilities, corporate headquarters, parks, and more. His work can be seen throughout New York City and the world.

George is loved forever by his wife of 47 years, Cynthia Bowser Semmens; his children, Dr. Katharine Semmens (Lee Walter), and Geoffrey Semmens (Isobel Semmens); and his grandchildren, Clara Walter, Lydia Walter, and George Robert Semmens. His beloved family further includes his sister, Elizabeth Skrainar (Stephen Skrainar); his brother-in-law, Douglas Bowser (Gail Bowser); his niece, Erin Bowser; and his nephews, Derek Skrainar and Kyle Bowser. He also enjoyed family times and ties with extended family. His parents, Marian Spencer and Harold Semmens, predeceased him.

George loved travel and adventures with Cynthia. He also could be seen around his former town wherever his favorite musicians were playing and always had music on — loud! George spent the last four years planning and watching his dream home being built to completion overlooking the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia.

George lived his life with integrity —  for him there was right and wrong, and he was unafraid to express his opinions. He lived life with enthusiasm, generosity, and passion.

A celebration of life will take place Nov. 22, at his beloved home in Cape Charles. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in George’s name to pancreatic cancer research or the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA).
