Mr. William Michael “Mike” Avery passed away suddenly on July 10, 2026, at the age of 77.
Born in Dover, Del., and raised in Salisbury, Md., Mike found his permanent home in Central Florida after moving to Cocoa Beach in the mid-1970s.
A remarkably smart and compassionate professional, he worked as a CRNA for over 30 years, dedicating his career to caring for others along the coast and in the Orlando area.
Mike was a genuine character known for his fiery spirit and an incredible sense of humor. He was exceptionally friendly and outgoing — the kind of person who would happily speak to anyone and always had an amusing story ready to share. Those who knew him best will remember him as profoundly kind and giving. His generous and selfless nature truly touched everyone he met.
An adventurous soul, Mike’s love of travel took him on frequent journeys across the United States and Europe, as well as on many beloved cruises through the Caribbean. He took great pleasure in his annual family gathering at Emerald Isle, N.C. His favorite memories from these trips were so often centered around the wonderful food he enjoyed along the way.
Closer to home, Mike was a devoted animal lover. Throughout his life, he was the proud pet parent to many dogs and cats. His loving heart will be deeply missed by his most recently rescued companions: Nora, the cat, and his dogs, Oliver, Reggie, and Sadie.
Mike is survived by his loving partner and spouse of 37 years, Dennis Brandstetter. He also leaves behind a close-knit family, including his in-laws: Louis and Mary Brandstetter, Susan Nixon and Virginia Lasoski-Nepa, and Richard Brandstetter, and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ernestine Bloxom Avery and William Edward Avery.
An interment service will be held at his family plot in Parksley Cemetery, Parksley, on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Dr. Benita Harris officiating.
