Mrs. Jane Spencer Gordon went to be with her maker on Aug. 11, 2026, after a brief illness. The daughter of the late Edward Spencer and the late Bess Longnecker Spencer, she was born on June 8, 1944, in Lima, Peru.
Jane was an adventurous woman of many talents. She was an artist, an editor and wordsmith, a musician who played piano and violin, a singer and dancer, a former cheerleader, a caregiver, and a decorator. She graduated from Bay Shore High School in New York and attended community college and Carnegie University.
Jane was a lover of family, friends, in-laws, fellow parishioners, animals, wildlife, jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and sunning, beachcombing, and swimming in the ocean and bays from Maine to the Florida Keys and panhandle.
In later life, Jane reconnected with an old friend, Joe Stevens, of Jamesville. She enjoyed the blue crabs, clams, oysters, and fish plentiful on the Eastern Shore, as well as swimming and sunning on the bayside and seaside from Kiptopeke, Cape Charles, and Nassawadox Creek to Wachapreague and Chincoteague.
Jane was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Thomas Gordon, and her sister, Betsy Spencer Patterson.
She is survived by her children, Leah Cavalli, Tom Gordon, Andy Gordon, and Charlie Gordon; a large tribe of in-laws, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; her partner, Joe Stevens; and her “adopted” family in Virginia and New York.
A service and opportunity to celebrate Jane’s life will be held at Powelton Presbyterian Church, 25 Main St.,Wachapreague, VA 23480 at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jane’s memory may be made to Powelton Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 51, Wachapreague, VA 23480, or to the charity of one’s choice.
