Mr. Roy M. Saunders, of Charlotte Courthouse, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, peacefully passed away on April 14, 2026, in Chesapeake, surrounded by family. At 85 years old, he left behind a legacy of love, hard work, and a deep connection with nature.
A true outdoorsman, Roy’s life was deeply intertwined with the coastal regions of Virginia and North Carolina. His passion for the outdoors was evident in his lifelong pursuits of hunting, fishing, and gardening, which he enthusiastically shared with family and friends.
From 1977 to 1999, Roy and his devoted wife of 67 years, Eilene, owned and operated the Peacock Motor Inn in Cape Charles, embodying the spirit of hard work and hospitality. Known for his strong work ethic and commitment to excellence, Roy took pride in every task he undertook.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Roy M. Saunders III and daughter-in-law, Lalona, of Chesapeake; his daughter, Tracey Mello and son-in-law, Ed, of Townsend; six grandchildren, Melanie Parker, Bonnie Boan, Sarah Hewett, Ashley Nettles, Madison Mello, and Edward Mello. The family tree extends further with nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In accordance with Roy’s wishes, a private family service will be held to commemorate his life and celebrate his memory.
