Mrs. Mary Jeanette “Janie” Pruitt, 76, of Onancock, was joyously reunited with her beloved husband, Alfred Ayres “Al” Pruitt Jr., on Sunday, April 5, 2026.
Born March 30, 1950, in Fruitland, Md., she was the daughter of the late James Thomas “Pete” Banks and Mary Lee Banks.
Soon after high school, Janie became a licensed beautician and also worked among many familiar faces behind the counter at Corner Bakery. She later earned her associate degree and began her career as a legal secretary with Mapp, Mapp & Klein, where she remained for several decades before retiring.
Janie’s life revolved around her two greatest loves and priorities — her husband, Al, and their son, Skidder. Throughout their 50 years of marriage, Janie and Al shared a passion for dancing and traveling — spending many evenings on the dance floor and taking trips to the Caribbean, Atlantic City to play the slots, NASCAR races, and destinations across the United States. When Skidder was born, their family was complete. Janie was the epitome of a devoted wife and mother and will be forever remembered for the warmth and kindness she shared with all who knew her.
Janie is survived by her son, Alfred Ayres “Skidder” Pruitt III, of Onancock; her sister, Jacqueline “Jackie” Lynch, of Selbyville, Del.; her brothers-in-law, Walter Donaway, of Powellville, Md., and Mark S. Pruitt and his wife, Robin, of Belle Haven; as well as several nieces and nephews and their families.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother, James T. Banks Jr.; her sister, Linda Donaway; and her brother-in-law, C. Kenny Lynch.
Services will be conducted from the graveside at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery on Tuesday, April 14, at 11 a.m.
Contributions in Janie’s memory may be made to the Eastern Shore Community Services Board (ESCSB), P.O. Box 318, Tasley, VA 23441, to assist those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
