Captain Richard Edward Belote, 91, of Lewes, Del., and formerly of Willis Wharf, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Feb. 24, 2025.

Born in Mappsburg, he was the son of the late Edward Belote and Mary Blanche Doughty Belote. Captain Belote was employed with the Virginia Ferry Company and The Delaware Bay and River Authority at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Company and retired from the Delaware Pilots Association.

In addition to his wife, Rose Marie Belote, he is survived by his children, Richard Ames Belote (Clare), Charles Edward Belote, Tammy Lynn Chorman (Nelson), and William Scott Belote (Melissa). He is also survived by his stepchildren, Michael Daffner (Mickey), Linda Daffner Abbott, and David Matthews (Robin).

He was predeceased by a son, Richard Wayne Belote, and two stepchildren, Gerald Daffner and Dominick Daffner. He had many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great- grandchildren — too numerous to count. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Captain Belote was a world champion decoy and waterfowl carver. He also provided an oral history for the Cape Charles Museum and was a member of The Barrier Islands Museum. He can be seen on YouTube videos discussing his life with the Virginia Ferry Company. He loved anything to do with the water, including hunting, fishing, crabbing, and clamming. He enjoyed time spent with family and friends.

Funeral services were held at Doughty Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 5, at 1:30 p.m. His celebration of life was officiated by Pastor Zachary Lewis. Family received friends one hour prior to service. Interment followed at Belle Haven Cemetery.
