Mr. James Spencer “Jim” Baird, 93, of Bloxom, husband of the late Jane Fluharty Baird, passed away on Feb. 12, 2025, at Commonwealth Senior Living – Memory Care in Onancock.

Born on April 10, 1931, in Buckingham County, he was the son of the late William Alexander Baird and Julia Spencer Baird. Known affectionately from boyhood to his Buckingham family and friends as “Buddy,” Jim dearly loved his family, didn’t know a stranger, and would give the shirt off his back to help a friend. Jim was a proud U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. He then went on to serve the Eastern Shore as a Virginia state master trooper, retiring after 36 years of service.

Known for being honest and fair, Jim was well-known and well-respected in the community and as a friend. He was a talented woodworker who enjoyed building furniture and other items. He was an avid NASCAR fan and spent many Daytona 500s in Florida with “the boys” in the Davis Winnebago. Above all, he was a loving and devoted husband and father who always did whatever he could to help his family.

In addition to his beloved wife of 53 years, Jane, and his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Porter Baird Law.

Jim is survived by his children, James Spencer Baird and his wife, Molly, of Fairfax, Rolanda Baird, of Greenbush, and Julie Bloxom and her husband, Doug, of New Church; his grandchildren, Alec Baird and his wife, Kendra, Kristin Baird, Brooke Bloxom, Cody Bloxom, and Jenna Holmes; his great-grandchildren, Kemp Alexander Baird, Malik James Holmes, and Meilani Jane Holmes; his sisters, Jessalyn Baird Foster and June Baird Crews and her husband, Dabney; his sister-in-law, Joan Byrd-Grimes and her husband, Glen; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of friends.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank-you to the staff and doctors at Commonwealth Senior Living – Memory Care.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. from the Modest Town Baptist Church with Pastor Cody Ramsay officiating. Interment was private.

The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Modest Town Baptist Church.
