Mrs. Jane Herbert, of Onancock, passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. Born on April 30, 1944, in Bronxville, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Doris Pittore.

Jane was the prevailing hostess in the family. She found great joy in cooking, fishing, entertaining, and fashion — but her foremost passion in life was being a wife to her husband, Ercle Herbert Jr., and mother to her boys, Ercle Herbert III and John Herbert.

Jane was raised in New York and attended a Catholic school as a young girl, and she attended college in the South. Always well-dressed and with an eye on the latest fashion trends, she became a successful buyer for Lord & Taylor. That path led her to the love of her life, Ercle. After marriage, she moved to Washington, D.C., and became a buyer for Garfinckel’s.

Fifty-five years ago, Jane and Ercle moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia and restored a house together. They spent many happy years together turning that house into a home.

Over the years, Jane was active in the community. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, where she was a longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary. During their one-year residence in Palm Beach, Fla., she was a member of the Palm Beach Ladies Club. She was generous with her time and even more so with her love.

A favorite pastime of the Herberts was fishing in various parts of the U.S., Mexico, and South America, and she enjoyed a good reputation as a member of the 20-lb. Light Tackle Fishing Club. It didn’t matter if it was deep sea or freshwater, the couple caught a lot of fish. On the next fishing trip, her family may feel her absence but will cherish every memory they made together on the water.

Jane is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Ercle H. Herbert Jr., of Onancock; children, Ercle F. Herbert III, of Las Vegas, Nev., and John Laurence Herbert, of Richmond, Maine; and several extended family members and friends.

She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Doris Pittore, and sister, Gail Pittore.

A memorial mass will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Onley, on Saturday, Aug. 17, at 10 a.m., with Father Michael Imperial officiating.
