Mr. David Ritchie Lumgair Jr., age 81, of Painter, passed away Friday, March 22, 2024. He was born in upstate New York to the late David R. Lumgair Sr. and the late Thelma Sears Lumgair.
After graduating from high school, he entered Princeton University, where he received a bachelor’s degree with honors. The following fall, he went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a master’s degree in chemical engineering.
He went to work for Esso Research and Engineering (now ExxonMobil) until his retirement 34 years later. Exxon retained him as a consultant for many years. Although his job required him to live in several different states plus Europe, Canada, and Sweden, he always tried to support his community.
He met his wife when they both worked on a United Way campaign. As an Exxon employee, he worked on several company-sponsored Habitat for Humanity homes. Through the years, he was always active in a church, supported school activities and Boy Scouts, and as an EMT served on a volunteer first-aid squad for many years.
Locally, he enjoyed a range of activities, from being a member of the Exmore Rotary Club to serving several years on the Accomack County Planning Commission. Dave enjoyed fishing and boating on the bayside and seaside and the chance to grow a big garden.
Dave is survived by his wife, Mary Hutchinson Lumgair; his son, David (Ashley) Lumgair; his daughter, Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Lumgair; his grandson, Brecken Porter Lumgair; his sister, Nancy L. Cook; his sister-in-law, Shirley C. Hutchinson; and several nephews.
A brief graveside service will be on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Saint George’s Cemetery in Pungoteague with the Rev. Carrie and Robert Talbott officiating.
