Mrs. Carolyn Jean Kellam White, 78, wife the late Charles Edward White Jr. and a resident of Fairview, Cape Charles, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at the home of her daughter surrounded by her family. A native of Belle Haven, she was the second daughter born to a large family of five boys and two girls. During her life she managed a laundromat, babysat children, and cleaned homes to help provide for her family. She lost her husband when her children were young. She was a good mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Jean was a good homemaker and her home was always immaculate. She will be missed.
She is survived by two daughters, Melissa White Press and her husband, Torance, of Suffolk, and Tonya Lynn White and her husband, Shawn Dunaway, of Charlottesville; six grandchildren, Dakota “Koty” Passarelli, Cayela Butler, Clairese Smith, Sarita Smith, Christine Medlock, and Sherry Jean Hughes; five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Barbara Ann Kellam, of Nassawadox; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, John Walter Kellam and Fannie Voyles Kellam; her son, David Lee Hughes; a sister, Fannie Winslow; five brothers; and longtime companion, Jay Burroughs Jr.
Graveside services will be held Monday, June 5, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Belle Haven Cemetery with Pastor June Thomas officiating. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeastern Virginia, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502.
