Mr. John Arnold Denton Sr., 97, a resident of Pungoteague, passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022, at his residence surrounded by his family. Born Sept. 26, 1924, in Roosevelt, N.Y., he was the son of the late John Denton and the late Catherine Denton. He was married to the late Joan Wright Denton and was father to the late John Arnold Denton Jr. John was owner of an auto salvage yard in New York prior to his retirement. He proudly was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Active in the Ruritan Club for many years, he thoroughly enjoyed being with family and friends. He was always happy telling jokes and he was a great historian and storyteller. John will be greatly missed.

John is survived by his daughter-in-law, Michele Denton-Blake, and her husband, Frank Blake III, of Pungoteague; granddaughter, Amanda Denton-Klotz, and her husband, Dylan, of Suffolk, Va.; grandson, Brandon Parks, of Pungoteague; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, wife, and son, he was predeceased by three brothers, Howard (Tuffy) Denton, Horace Denton, and Albert (Joe) Denton; and one sister, Ethel Denton.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, at 11 a.m., at Doughty Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rob Kelly officiating. Family will join friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree in John’s memory or memorials may be made to Pungoteague Ruritan Club c/o Paul Custis, 31360 OK Farm Lane, Painter, VA 23420.
