Add Chincoteague Elementary to the list of local schools where coronavirus cases have been recorded.

Accomack County Schools Superintendent W.C. “Chris” Holland alerted parents Nov. 10 via letter that a Chincoteague Elementary student or staff member has been diagnosed with  coronavirus, the virus that causes COVID-19 disease.

“This person was on school premises on November 9, 2020 and did have direct exposure with several members of our community,” Holland said in the letter.

He said ACPS is working closely with the local health department to identify who might have had close contact with the diagnosed person to determine who might have been exposed to the virus.

“Chincoteague Elementary School will remain OPEN during this time,” Holland said. He advised parents to monitor children for COVID-19 symptoms, which generally include “mild, cold-like symptoms, such as fever, runny nose, and cough. Vomiting and diarrhea have also been reported in some children.” The full text of the letter can be found here.
