Mrs. Jenny Somers, was born on Chincoteague Jan. 29, 1952, to the late Jimmie and Mary Thornton. She passed peacefully Dec. 21, 2019, at her home on Chincoteague surrounded by family. Jenny lived the majority of her life on the island and was proud to be a Teaguer. Jenny was a talented artist, superb cook/chef, informative tour guide/wildlife interpreter, skilled draftsman, historian, and fascinating story teller. She loved teaching others how to paint and how to cook traditional Chincoteague meals. She began drawing and painting as a teen and was the proud winner of many awards for her artwork.
Jenny will be missed by her loving husband, Stewart; sister, Jane (Mitch); sister-in-law, Mary (Bruce); son, Bryan (Lisa); granddaughter, Becky; niece, Amber (Matt); nephews, Luke and Joe; and many other friends and family. At Jenny’s request, she was cremated and there will be no immediate service. A memorial boat cruise up the bay will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jenny’s name to the Museum of Chincoteague Island.
