Mrs. Barbara Jean Mason, 70, of Chincoteague Island, passed away on Dec. 28, 2018, at her residence with her loving husband of 46 years, Tyrone Mason, by her side.
She was born on Chincoteague on Jan. 15, 1948, to the late Robert and Norma Lee Taylor McCoy.
Mrs. Mason was a member of Union Baptist Church, Baptist Women, and the Rainbow Sisters Sunday School Class. She was a life member of the National Rifle Association and holder of many national records in NRA action pistol. She was a member of 3C’s, Just Us Singers, and a 1966 graduate of Chincoteague High School. Mrs. Mason was also a former member of NOAAWIVA Sportsmen and former quilter at Union Baptist Church. She began her service as church secretary on Monday, June 8, 2015, until her health would no longer allow.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, painting, woodwork, competitive pistol shooting, riding her trike, traveling, genealogy, decorating cakes and computer games. Through the years she raised many baby animals which, for her, was a great joy.
Mrs. Mason is survived by her loving spouse of 46 years, Tyrone Mason, of Chincoteague; aunt, Thalia Virginia Watson, of Nelsonia; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; aunt, Katherine Ann McCoy; and beloved yellow lab, Dutchess.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at the Union Baptist Church, Chincoteague, with the Rev. Kevin Eley officiating. Burial took place in the Greenwood Cemetery on Chincoteague.
