Mrs. Mary “Jerry” Field, 93, of Onancock, died peacefully in her home Jan. 6, 2019, at Commonwealth Senior Living (previously The Hermitage on the Eastern Shore).

She was born Oct. 28, 1925, to the late John McGimpsey and the late Marie McGimpsey, in Middletown, N.Y. In 1946, she married Dudley Field and settled in Rockland County, N.Y., where they brought up four sons. Upon Mr. Field’s retirement as a captain for American Airlines, they retired first to Fire Island, off Long Island, N.Y., and then, in 1993, to Exmore. In 2011, they moved to The Hermitage on the Eastern Shore. In all, they were married 68 years.

Mrs. Field was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, cousin, aunt, and friend. She was particularly proud that her large circle of friends spanned all age groups. A holiday or special gathering always included a diverse and especially fun group of “Jerry’s friends.” Mrs. Field was an avid reader, a crossword puzzle enthusiast, and strongly preferred summer over winter. Watching a colorful sunset could stir her emotions.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Field is predeceased by her husband, Dudley, and two sisters, Muriel and Doris. She is survived by four sons, Thomas, Scott, and James (Kimberly), all of Long Island, N.Y., and Brian (Barbara), of Lumberton, N.J.; four grandchildren, Caitlin (Julia), Tyler (Sarah), Caleigh (George), and Isabella; a cousin, Eric Dodge and his wife, Peaches, of Onancock; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all the staff at The Hermitage for the loving care they have given Mrs. Field over the last seven years and expresses their love and gratitude to Carolyn Upshur for her devotion to Mrs. Field (and Dudley). Finally, thanks to Williams Funeral Homes for making arrangements (www.williamsfuneralhomes.com).

A memorial service will be held in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the ACLU, https://action.aclu.org/give/make-gift-aclu-someones-memory, or the Eastern Shore Coalition Against Domestic Violence, P.O. Box 3, Onancock, VA 23417.
