Shore Swim hit the road last Friday to participate in a rare invitational at the Cambridge YMCA in Maryland. As one of eight teams taking part in the event, Shore Swim took a break from the usual competitive meet, and instead, took part in the “fun” invitational, with events such as a doggie paddle relay while barking.
Other fun events included a wet T-shirt relay, where one swimmer swam with a shirt on and then had to maneuver the wet shirt off and onto the next swimmer. All the events were relays, instead of the normally scheduled meets that also include individual events. All of these elements made the event different and just plain fun for all the athletes who were able to participate.
Lacy Gouldin, Luke Parks, Lauren Johnston, Patrick Lilliston, Donathon Johnson, Nora Bahn, Allie Penland, Cade Williams, McKaley Parks, Jamie Wert, and Taylor Thornes all took time out of their holiday break to make the trek to Maryland for the fun, but beneficial, event.
Head coach Bryan McElwain said the team had a blast. “It was a great event put on by the Cambridge team. It gave our swimmers a reason to practice over the holiday break. The meet got them something to look forward to. It was also great to reward the swimmers with a fun and exciting event for a change, for all the hard work and pool time they put in too,” reflected Coach McElwain.
Shore Swim will dive into the second half of the season, having six of its eight meets in January, and are set to host their next swim meet at the Eastern Shore YMCA in Onley, Jan. 11, against Pocomoke High School.
