Mr. George William Carey

Mr. George William Carey, 70, husband of Peggy Moore Carey for 29 years and a resident of Cape Charles, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018, at home. Born Dec. 13, 1947, in Gettysburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Chester Allen Carey and the late Dorothy Elizabeth McCauslin. He was a retired railroad engineer with eight years of service with the Eastern Shore Railroad. He also worked for Pruitt Seafood, in Washington, D.C., for 13 years and worked for Dick Doughty, in Painter, for 10 years.

Mr. Carey was a member and a deacon of Cape Charles Baptist Church where he was always willing to do anything to help. He had a heart of gold, a kind soul, and was very active in the community.

Other than his wife, he is survived by three sons, George W. Carey Jr., of Carlisle, Pa., Wallace Widgeon Jr., of Arab, Ala., and William “Bill” Widgeon, of Cape Charles; four daughters, Dawn M. Carey, of Carlisle, Pa.., April Carey, of Westminister, Md., Elsie Ferguson, of Nassawadox, and Jeanette Taylor and husband, Craig Taylor, of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Jean Cox, of Wytheville, Va., and Caroline Hollinger, of Dillsburg, Pa.; two brothers, Glenn Allen Carey, of Gardner, Pa., and Larry D. Carey, of Carlisle, Pa.; 23 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Paula Champion, of Cape Charles. He was predeceased by a brother, Johnny C. Carey, who died in the Vietnam War.

A memorial service was held on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018 at Cape Charles Baptist Church with the Rev. Russell Goodrich officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eastern Shore SPCA, P.O. Box 184, Onley, VA. 23418 or to Intrepid Hospice, 165 Market Street, Suite 2, Onancock, VA. 23417.
