53-year-old Marinabernadett Esthermarie Long, of Virginia Beach, sustained fatal injuries in a crash near Treherneville on Oct. 16 at around 8:30 p.m.
A 2022 Kia Seltos driven by 58-year-old Robert Lee Ward III, of Hallwood, was traveling southbound on U.S. Route 13 near Treherneville Drive when the vehicle went off the roadway, striking a culvert before overturning and hitting a utility pole.
Long sustained serious injuries at the time and was transported to the hospital for treatment. On October 19, the Virginia State Police were notified that her injuries proved fatal.
Ward sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was not transported to the hospital. Ward was charged with failure to maintain lane, driving while suspended, and driving without a seatbelt. The incident remains under investigation.
