Mr. Holland “Dill” Wilgus Sr., 89, of Chincoteague Island, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026.
He died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones at TidalHealth Peninsula Regional Hospital.
Dill was born on Chincoteague on Oct. 12, 1936. He was the only one of his siblings to graduate from Chincoteague High School. He was a long-time member of the Union Baptist Church and president of the Anglers Sunday School Class.
His first job was with Burton’s Seafood, working on the water. He also drove a tractor-trailer for many years, lastly for Tyson Foods. His last employment was being a part owner of the Island Family Restaurant. After that, he was ready to retire.
Dill is survived by his spouse, Arlene; his daughter, Dawn Nock and her husband, Ronnie; his sons, Howard Wilgus and Robert Bash; his granddaughter, Jessica Huffman and her husband, Eric; his great-granddaughter Sabrina Huffman; his stepson, Jack Williams and his wife, Tracy; his step-granddaughter, Denise Stadler, and her husband, Phil; his step-grandson, Eric Williams and his wife, Elizabeth; and his step-grandson, Jack Williams Jr. and his wife, Shelby; along with many step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Dill was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Nellie Wilgus; his sister, Lila Mae “Bess” Lewis; his brother, Grover “Drizzle” Wilgus; his nephew, Christopher Wilgus; and his stepson, Dennis Williams.
In his younger days, Dill loved to ride in his boat and go fishing and was a big fan of the Baltimore Orioles. He was a very kindhearted man and was devoted to his wife, Arlene.
A visitation was held on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Salyer Funeral Home on Chincoteague Island. Funeral services were held at Union Baptist Church on Chincoteague Island on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m.
Services were entrusted to Salyer Funeral Home, Inc., on Chincoteague Island.
