On Aug. 5, 1956, Lillian Marshall, 7, of the Bayview community, near Cheriton, was fatally shot in the chest after she had been used as a human shield by a man attempting to escape an angry assailant. Obie Cruise, 31, of Bayview, threatened Roy Turner with a .38 caliber firearm. Turner jumped to his feet as Marshall came walking by. He grabbed the child, who was shot by Cruise. “This incredibly barbarous and senseless killing may well be historic in Northampton County, both for the heartlessness involved and for an odd law situation that is raised,” the Peninsula Enterprise newspaper reported.
On Aug. 5, 1955, H. Cecil Hines, of Onancock, suffered a broken neck while fishing in the Chesapeake Bay near Onancock Creek. The group was nearing Weir Point and were in the process of landing to eat their lunch when Hines walked forward in the boat to throw out the anchor. As he did, he slipped and hit his chest against the guardrail of the boat and toppled overboard in two feet of water. He broke his neck in two places.
On Aug. 5, 1952, Edna Long, of Richmond, was chosen Miss Virginia in a contest held at the Palace Theatre, Cape Charles. Long represented the state in the Miss America contest in Atlantic City, N.J. Peggy Jane Harrison, of Cape Charles, won third place.
On Aug. 5, 1951, the Community Volunteer Fire Company in Exmore put into service a new Chevrolet fire truck with an 800-gallon water tank. It was purchased from the Bayly Chevrolet Sales Corp and the fire equipment was installed by Oren Roanoke Corp.
