Mrs. Darlene Anne (Cherrix) Wetherington was born on July 15, 1940, to Mr. Homer L. “Jake” Cherrix Sr. and Rowena Virginia (née Melvin) Cherrix on Chincoteague Island, VA.
Darlene passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on May 17, 2026.
Darlene married Daniel Wetherington on March 17, 1962.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her daughter, Cheyne Adams; her granddaughter, Heather Petrillo; her parents, Homer and Rowena Cherrix; and her grandparents, Laura and Robert Taylor and Mary Melvin.
Darlene is survived by her daughters, Megan Peoples and Gina Wetherington; her brother, Homer “Jake” Cherrix Jr. (Debbie); her sisters, Mary Laura Roberts (Ricky) and Lynn Johnson (Bobby); her grandchildren, Marquita Olavarria (Natastia), Daniel Petrillo (Carissa), Melissa Rohan (Kevin), Christopher Peoples, Kaitlyn Peoples, Trace Adams, Ashlyn Morgan, and Amber Morgan; as well as her great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Darlene was a graduate of Chincoteague High School and was an avid golfer. She will be missed by many.
Funeral services will be at Christ United Methodist Church on Chincoteague Island, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, with visitation one hour prior. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital online, and/or SPCA Eastern Shore at P.O. Box 164, Onley, VA 23418, or online.
