Mrs. Margaret Baine, 82 of Gulfport, Miss., went home to be with her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, on Feb. 3, 2026.
Margaret was born on Sept. 7, 1943, to Joseph and Alice Elliott. She grew up in Onancock and spent most of her adult life on the Gulf Coast. Known to many as “Miss Meg,” she was admired for her faith, kindness, strength, and chocolate pies.
A longtime member of the United Methodist Women’s group and a devoted church choir member, her faith inspired many. She was known for her dedicated service to Mississippi City Methodist Church, her longtime nursing career, and her love for Mardi Gras. She had a unique ability to make every moment a lasting memory with anyone she met.
Miss Meg lived a full life, filled with close friends, prayer, song, and hot coffee. While Miss Meg proudly called herself a Southern Belle of the Gulf Coast, her heart always knew the Eastern Shore of Virginia as home. Between the snowy winters, family history, childhood friends, and the Cherrix family, she fondly recalled her love of life on the Shore.
She is survived by her loving children, Oscar and Shanna Baine; her cherished grandchildren, Dylan Francway, Ryan Francway, Logan Baine, and Emily Baine; her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Sue Elliott; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Alice Elliott; her husband, Wade Montgomery Baine; her sister, Elizabeth Susan Elliott; her grandparents, Larry and Lillian Disharoon; and her best friend — her “waterman” — Robert Wayne Cherrix.
Known as Miss Meg, Ma, Mimi, or Margaret — on the Coast or on the Shore — she will always be remembered as “the sweetest woman you’ve ever met.” You can find her in zippy red cardinals and deep blue, springtime hydrangeas.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 22, at Mississippi City United Methodist Church, 219 Courthouse Road, Gulfport, MS 39507.
