Mapp Cullen

Oct 3, 2025 | Obituaries

Mr. William “Mapp” Cullen, 58, of Mappsburg, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born Oct. 4, 1966, in Nassawadox, he was the son of Mary Thom W. Cullen, of Mappsburg, and the late Winter C. Cullen III.

Mapp attended Hargrave Military Academy in middle school, where he earned the leadership medal and played on the basketball team. He later returned home to the Shore and graduated from Nandua High School, class of 1986. Mapp was a member of Painter Garrison’s Methodist Church, where he and his family faithfully worshiped throughout his life.

As a third-generation farmer, working the land was in his blood, and he was proud to continue the Cullen family legacy through his work with Floyd Farms. Mapp loved planting and producing crops, especially corn and turnip greens. Known for his skill with heavy equipment, he had a special gift for grading land with remarkable precision, a skill in which he took great pride.

Mapp was your typical Eastern Shore boy who from a young age spent countless hours on the water, hunting, fishing, and clamming. He had a natural way with animals, particularly horses and dogs, and he never missed a chance to share a laugh with friends and strangers alike. Mapp’s greatest joy, however, was sharing his passion for boating, horses, and perhaps a little 1980s music with his daughters, making memories that will stand the test of time.

In addition to his mother, Mapp is survived by his daughters, Gina Ames and her husband, Tyler, of Melfa, and Dana Sexauer and her husband, Matthew, of Lynchburg; his brother, W. Calvert Cullen IV and his wife, Mary Jane, of Cape Charles; his sister, Kathy Cullen Henley, of Painter; his grandchildren, Summer, Carsyn, and Tyler Jr. “T.J.,” Ames and Mattison and Claire Sexauer; his aunt, Marion Windsor; his nieces and nephew, Lacy Henley, Savannah Cullen-Bogart (Nick), Kristen Cullen, and Dr. Winter C. Cullen V (Kendall); his cousins, Hal Floyd (Cindy), Betty Spencer (Eddie), Sheila England (Jeff), Robert Windsor, Tommy Windsor (Sallye), and David Windsor; and last but not least, his beloved dog, Jack.

A memorial service will be held at Painter Garrison’s Methodist Church on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Charlene Harris officiating.

Contributions in Mapp’s memory may be made to Painter Garrison’s Methodist Church, P.O. Box 502, Painter, VA 23420 or to the Eastern Shore SPCA, P.O. Box 164, Onley, VA 23418, www.shorespca.com
