The voice of Accomack and Northampton counties on Virginia’s Eastern Shore

Lloyd Thatcher

Sep 19, 2025 | Obituaries

Mr. Lloyd R. Thatcher passed away peacefully on Sept. 11, 2025, at his home in Machipongo with his loving wife, Sue, at his side.

Lloyd was born on Oct. 7, 1944, in Ohio to Stanley and Dorothy Thatcher. He and his three siblings all hail from Kent, Ohio.

Lloyd dedicated his career to Sun Oil for most of his working years. In his early 20s, he was transferred to the Chester County, Penn., area. Throughout his time with Sun Oil, he provided leadership, guidance, and valued advice. He eventually retired from Sun Oil and worked as a contractor for Buckeye Oil. Again, his knowledge as a dispatcher was highly regarded by his peers.

After fully retiring, Lloyd and his wife, Sue, bought a fifth wheel trailer, packed up everything they needed, including their two beloved dogs, Shasta and Gina, and hit the road! They had a shared love of adventure and explored the United States, visiting their extended family as much as they could. They discovered Mission, Texas, and bought a full-time site so they could be permanent residents during the winter months. They made many, many friends in Mission and attended all the events they could. Line dancing was a huge favorite.

Lloyd and Sue then found their way to Machipongo. They bought a home on the water and settled into the Eastern Shore’s slow-paced life. This area also had all of the things they loved — restaurants, golf courses, wineries, and most important of all, fresh oysters!

Lloyd’s first passion was sports, either playing or watching. Golf was his favorite. He could be found on many afternoons out on the links or watching a PGA tournament. He also loved college football. Every New Year’s Day, he would host a drop-in party to watch the college bowl games. Lloyd was also dedicated to helping rescue animals. He and Sue adopted six rescue dogs and a couple of kitties, as well.

Lloyd was highly regarded by his family and friends. He was knowledgeable on so many things and passed on his wisdom to all, especially his daughter, Dawn. From him, she learned to ski, play golf, drive a stick shift, and shoot pool. He also taught her the value of standing up for yourself when needed. His sharp wit and sense of humor were legendary. Family and friends all benefited from his jokes. Most importantly of all, he was dedicated to his wife and kids.

Lloyd was preceded in death by both his parents, Stanley and Dorothy; and his siblings, Richard, Roberta (Pennypacker), and Rodney.

He is survived by his wife, Sue; his daughter, Dawn Umstead (Todd); his stepdaughters, Julie Ament (SueAnn), and Shelley DuVarney (Richard); his stepson, Randy Ament; six granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

A service will be held on Friday, Sept. 19, at Hungars Church Parish House at 2 p.m. The church is located at 10107 Bayside Road, Machipongo, VA. All are welcome to attend.
