On Friday, September 5, 2025, Mrs. Virginia Ross Fisher, 78, passed away at her home in Onancock surrounded by her devoted family. Virginia was born on Chincoteague Island on Sept. 4, 1947, to the late Francis and Betty Ross. She became a sister to Wayne, now deceased, and years later to Michael. Virginia graduated from Chincoteague High School in 1966.
On Feb. 6, 1970, Virginia married Bill, her best friend and partner for the next 55 years. Together they created a loving Christian home and raised five children, who became her focus in life.
She was the mother of four daughters; Kathy Thornes (Bill), Karen Smith, Kris Justis (Will), and Ashley Harris (Calvin); and one son, Daryl Fisher. Virginia was also the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren, MJ, Morgan, Jordan, Brooke, Taylor, Lexi-Mae, and Cayden; as well as five great-grandchildren, Ava, Ryan, Paisley, Liam, and Davina.
Virginia had a variety of occupations that involved nurturing children. She was a childcare provider, school cafeteria worker, substitute teacher, and a kindergarten teacher. Being around and helping students of all ages brought her great joy.
Virginia was a devout Christian and a member of Onancock Baptist Church for many years, where she served on several committees and taught Sunday School. Her strong faith gave her comfort in the final years of her life.
The family is planning a private memorial service for a later date.
