Mrs. Claudia Ann Hedler Conroy, 88, of Rural Hall, N.C., died in her home on May 11, 2025, with her loving husband near her side after a short battle with cancer.

She was born on Feb. 9, 1937, on Long Island, N.Y., to Arthur and Anita (Corson) Hedler. Claudia grew up in Valley Stream, N.Y., and raised her family in Patchogue, N.Y.

Having been widowed at an early age, she married Vincent Conroy on May 19, 1985.  Together they lived in Valley Stream and in Utica, N.Y., before moving to their beloved Eastern Shore in 1998.  They first settled in Cape Charles and then moved to Cheriton, where Claudia was very active with Cheriton Methodist Church, Cape Charles Food Bank, and The Salvation Army.

In 2021, she and her husband moved to Rural Hall, N.C. (near Winston-Salem), to be closer to family.

Claudia is survived by her loving husband, Vincent; her three children, Sandi Tkaczuk, Gerald Raffe, and Lance Raffe; and her stepchildren, Vincent Conroy and Kate Conroy.  She also leaves behind seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family is planning a celebration of life in mid-September of this year in Winston-Salem.  If you are interested in attending, please contact Claudia’s daughter at [email protected].  Details will be provided at a later date.

If you would like to honor Claudia’s life and memory, please make a donation in her name to: Cape Charles Food Bank Pantry, c/o Cindy Cooke, 22576 Parsons Circle, Cape Charles, VA 23310 or to The Salvation Army, Lower Eastern Shore Corps, 407 Oak St., Salisbury, MD 21804.
