Heavy rain and strong wind continued Wednesday on the Eastern Shore, flooding roads, toppling trees, and halting the harvest of crops including wheat and potatoes.

Wind gusts reached 60 miles per hour around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, according to a spokesman there.

Rainfall measured at the Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Painter has totaled 3.5 inches over a 24-hour period ending Wednesday at 9:45 a.m.

The bridge-tunnel Wednesday morning was operating with wind restrictions that prevented empty trucks and vehicles with exterior cargo, among others, from driving on the bridge.

Wind restrictions on the bridge Wednesday also limited speeds to 45 mph and prohibited passing.
