Mrs. Darlene Mae Collins Cherrix, age 81, of Temperanceville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, at her home in Chincoteague with her loving family at her side.
Born on April 3, 1945, in Nassawadox, she was one of 12 children born to the late Arella Brittingham Collins and John E. Collins.
Her beauty held high standards inside and out. Intelligent as well as talented, she had many friends and was an active member of the church.
Her early years consisted of surviving, but later she got to enjoy being surrounded by more love and family than she could ever imagine. She had many hobbies that kept her busy, like crochet class, singing with the choir in church on a Sunday morning, and spending quality time with family. Other than being a mother, her proudest achievement was earning her beautician’s license, which she kept until her passing.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Arella Brittingham Collins; her father, John E. Collins; her sisters, Almeta Fleetwood, Kathryn Williams, Betty Lang, and Peggy Troutman; and her brothers, Johnny, Wade, and Bobby Dale Collins.
She is survived by her two children: her daughter, Kimberly Hill and her son-in-law, Phillip, and her son, David Cherrix; one granddaughter, Arella Harris and her husband, Roger; two sisters, Beverly Meyers and Barbara Squibb; and more than several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services took place at Union Baptist Church in Chincoteague on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Kevin Eley officiating. There was a visitation one hour prior to the funeral services.
Services were entrusted to Salyer Funeral Home on Chincoteague Island. Condolences may be made online at www.salyerfh.com
