On Aug. 12, 1963, Jack Nottingham, manager of the A&P store in Exmore, was named chairman of a nominating committee to propose officers for an Exmore business association. Temporary chairman John Daughtery said the large group present at the meeting expected to organize an active group to promote the interests of Exmore.
On Aug. 12, 1962, what police termed a “near riot” broke out in Onancock when 100 people gathered — and 15 to 20 were fighting — near the town’s municipal building and on Onanccok Street. An Onancock town police officer said some teenagers got into a fight and were jointed by a group of adults. A nearby vehicle investigated by the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office was found to have a pitch fork, hammers, and a butcher knife in the trunk.

On Aug. 12, 1952, Elic J. Kelley, 48, of Accomac, was killed instantly when his truck plowed into a standing freight train which had stopped across U.S. Route 50 in Linkwood, Md., about 10 miles east of Cambridge. He was hauling a load of tomatoes to a cannery.
On Aug. 12, 1945, U.S. Army Pfc. George William Crockett, 22, of Tangier Island, died of injuries sustained in an accident in the Philippines. The son of Connor R. Crockett and Mariah E. Crockett, his gravesite is at the Swain Memorial United Methodist Church on Tangier Island.
