On July 22, 1936, Cape Charles resident Curry Thomas was killed and his wife was injured when a bomb exploded inside a package they were opening in their vehicle at their home, The Hermitage. The couple thought it was a wedding gift. “Nothing was left of the genial Curry Thomas but his head,” the Peninsula Enterprise newspaper reported. Thomas, 47, was a prominent Cape Charles area farmer.
