On July 3, 1948, Charles Nicolls, 47, of Keller, drowned after leaving Goose Island in a motorboat on his way to Nandua. He was the son of the late Charles E. Nicolls, a former member and chairman of the Accomack County Board of Supervisors.
On July 3, 1945, 5-month-old Judith May Kilmon was fatally injured when she fell from a truck on the road between Epworth Methodist Church and Willis Wharf, near Exmore. She was in a truck driven by her mother, Bentley Hugh Kilmon, of Exmore, and was being held by her grandmother, Mamie Beach. Opposite the Ballard chicken houses, the truck hit a rut in the road, causing the door to fly open. About the same time the truck gave a lurch and the baby was thrown from Beach’s arms to the surface of the treated highway.
On July 3, 1939, Judge Henry L. Upshur in Eastville was writing an arrest warrant for a North Carolina man at large when he noticed that his watch and chain had been stolen. The theft was reported to the county sheriff.
On July 3, 1937, Tangier Island Mayor Will Crockett was stabbed when he and two other men — one a minister — tried to arrest three suspects aboard a boat on charges of selling liquor. A second man with Crockett was hit with a boat oar and knocked overboard. The mayor then deputized 20 citizens who arrested the suspects and jailed them.
