Mr. Jerry Gordon Evans, 93, of Onley, was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on July 16, 1932, at the family home in Onley, he was the son of the late Winnie Core Evans and the late James Twyford Evans. Jerry lived a life grounded in faith, devoted to family, and dedicated to serving both his community and his country with humility and grace.

Jerry shared a remarkable love story with his beloved wife, June Horsey Evans. Married on Aug. 22, 1954, they were blessed with 71 years of unwavering love, partnership, and devotion to one another and to their family. Together, they built a home centered on faith, kindness, and enduring friendship.

A graduate of Onancock High School, class of 1951, Jerry proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard before continuing his education at Old Dominion University.

He later began a distinguished 36-year career with NASA and the federal government at NASA Wallops Flight Facility. During his years of service, he was recognized for his work on the Spacelab 2 mission, contributing to the advancement of America’s space program with quiet excellence and professionalism.

While Jerry valued his professional accomplishments, his greatest calling was his faith and service to others. A devoted member of Market Street Methodist Church, he faithfully served for many years as a lay leader, offering encouragement, wisdom, compassion, and steadfast support to countless members of his church family and community. His gentle spirit and servant’s heart touched many lives.

Jerry’s greatest pride and joy was his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Holly June Evans, and his sister, Dawn E. Dize.

He is survived by his loving wife, June Horsey Evans; his son, Terry Evans (Julie), of Melfa; his grandsons, Joshua Evans (Amanda), of Norfolk, and Cody Evans (Kristi), of Onancock; and his treasured great-grandchildren, Nora Holly Evans, Layla Rose Evans, Brooklyn Mae Evans, and Beckham Thomas Evans. He is also survived by his nephew, R. Wayne Dize, Jr. (Anne), and his niece, Cynthia Franklin.

Jerry will be remembered for his unwavering faith, gentle nature, deep love for his family, and lifelong dedication to serving others. His legacy of kindness, integrity, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the prayers, love, and support shown during this time of loss.

Funeral services were held at Market Street Methodist Church on Thursday, May 21, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. C. Ray Daisey officiating. The family gathered for private interment at the Mount Holly Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jerry’s memory may be designated to the charity of one’s choice.
