Mr. James W. Magette, age 79, fondly known as “Jimmy” or “Jim,” of Kitty Hawk, N.C., and formerly Exmore, passed away on Nov. 5, 2025, at the Outer Banks Health Hospital in Nags Head, N.C., following a rapid period of declining health.
He was a cancer survivor and triumphantly rang the bell in October of 2024. Sadly, other ailments and complications prevented a complete and permanent recovery. His family members remain grateful for the additional time his treatment gave them to be with him, and they hold the dedicated team that took part in his care at the Outer Banks Health Cowell Cancer Center in the highest regard. Jim’s family also wants to express heartfelt thanks to his dearest and nearby friends who supported and uplifted him in so many ways.
Born in 1946 in Norfolk, Jim was the son of the late Ezra C. Magette Jr. and the late Jacqueline W. Magette, of Exmore. He served proudly in the U.S. Army Special Forces and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a committed member of the National Rifle Association and a frequent blood donor to the American Red Cross.
Before retirement, his favorite thing to do at work on Saturday mornings was teaching children various building skills. For enjoyment, he loved to catch fish, crabs, and shrimp — particularly in the sound — and to spend time outdoors, admiring nature with his dogs.
Before his illness, Jim was an avid gardener and a fabulous home cook, being especially fond of incorporating chili peppers in almost everything he made. He loved to read, create, build, and paint and always had the best stories to tell, with gestures, humor, and a quick wit that made everyone laugh. He will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, quiet strength, and genuine love for life and those around him.
Jim is survived by his loving brother, William L. Magette, of Drogheda, Ireland; his daughter, Merianne Grigoriciuc, of Morehead City, N.C.; his son, Carter Magette, of Birdsnest; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and dear cousins.
Furthermore, he is survived by his other two children, who lovingly refer to him as “Pap,” Danyelle “Deni” Pickell, of Moyock, N.C.; and Christian Moore, of Chester; as well as their mother, Sally Magette; five additional grandchildren and two more great-grandchildren.
His family misses him immensely and feels blessed for receiving his love and guidance for so many years.
Last but definitely not least, he leaves behind his cherished dog, Lakota. She is being lovingly cared for by close friends. Jim’s final wishes are to reunite with his late dog, Savanna, at a very special spot, where they may take naps and play together for as long as they desire.
Jim’s family would like to graciously express gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and other caregivers at the Outer Banks Health Hospital for their compassion in his final days. The family truly appreciates the support of extended family and friends through this extremely difficult time. Though deeply saddened by the loss of such a wonderful man, may all who loved him find some comfort in knowing he is now at peace, without pain, resting easily and somewhat playfully.
Friends are encouraged to share condolences or memories on the Twiford Funeral Home website; however, Jim was emphatic about not wanting any funeral or memorial service, and the family has respected his wishes.
If it falls upon your heart and you sincerely want to do something to honor him, choose something that carries his spirit forward. The family suggests making a donation to a charity, church, animal shelter, children’s organization, or veterans support group of your choice.
The family encourages friends to give back to their communities through acts of kindness, such as donating food, clothing, or blankets; cooking meals; supporting service members; reading to children or hosting a book drive; visiting elderly residents; or taking part in community or building projects.
