The voice of Accomack and Northampton counties on Virginia’s Eastern Shore

Lt. Larry Ames Sr.

Aug 15, 2025 | Obituaries

Retired Lt. Larry E. Ames Sr., of Chesapeake, a proud native of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and U.S. Coast Guard veteran, Larry served with distinction for 23 years, retiring as a lieutenant.

Known for his sharp wit, engineering genius, and deep curiosity, Larry led a life of service, entrepreneurship, and quiet strength. After his military career, he launched a successful HVAC business and remained active in real estate. He was a lifelong learner, avid reader, and thoughtful conversationalist.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Elizabeth Ames, and his sister, Diane Ames.

He leaves behind his wife, Geraldine; sons, Larry Jr. and Gerald Patrick; six grandchildren, one great-grandson, and many cherished relatives and lifelong friends.

His final wish — to be cremated and his ashes returned to the sea — were honored by family and shipmates.

His legacy is one of service, laughter, and a brilliant mind that never stopped learning. He lived boldly, laughed deeply, and left this world with no debts and no regrets.

An online memorial tribute will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 7:00 p.m.
