Mrs. Sharon Wagoner Whittington was born on Easter Day, April 17, 1949, and passed on Easter Day, April 20, 2025. She has risen indeed!
Born in Salisbury, N.C., to Kenneth L. Wagoner and Ellese B. Wagoner, she is survived by her husband of 55 years, Jay Whittington. Left to cherish her memory are son, John and wife, Kate, and their children, Mya, Nina, and Jay, of Raleigh, N.C., and son, Scott and wife, Ellen, and their children, Bree and Holly, of Salisbury.
Sharon was a wonderful mother who supported her children despite actively battling multiple sclerosis for over 50 years. She was also a great Roonie to her five grandchildren, whom she adored.
Sharon is survived by two sisters, Peggy Mowery, of Salisbury, and Christine Rich, of Casselberry, Fla., as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Milly Cooper and Virginia Cochran.
When not spending time with her family, Sharon spent many years as an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the Crisis Council. She stayed very active with her church, volunteer work, friends, family, and especially her five grandchildren.
Sharon was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1975 and spent the majority of her adult life fighting hard for her health. She worked out daily and for many years would spend several hours each week swimming laps at the YMCA. Her determination and strong will were an inspiration to many as she showed others that even with a handicap, you can live a full and happy life.
A celebration of her life was held at First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury on April 26 at 2 p.m. Sharon was a dedicated Carolina Tarheels fan and the family requested that attendees wear Carolina Blue if possible.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Meals on Wheels at 720 Grove St., Salisbury, NC 28144 or Novant Kiser Hospice House, 1229 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, NC 28144.
