Dr. John Peyton Snead IV, age 91, passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, at his home in Onancock.

Born Sept. 27, 1933, in Front Royal, he was the son of the late John Peyton Snead III and Lydia Crabbe “Pinky” Snead, of Sperryville.

After graduating from Woodberry Forest School in 1954, John continued his education at the University of Virginia, where he received a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1955 and a medical degree in 1959. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

On Aug. 30, 1958, John married his soulmate, Sharon Fosque, with whom he built a beautiful life. After graduating from UVA, John enlisted in the U.S. Army and interned at Madigan General Hospital on Fort Lewis near Tacoma, Wash. From 1962 through 1967, John practiced family medicine with his father in Sperryville. In 1967, he was a resident at Georgetown University Medical Center. Upon completing his psychiatric residency, he practiced child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry in Falls Church, Leesburg, Rixeyville, and Warrenton. He served as director of the Fauquier Family Guidance Center and director of Psychiatry at Graydon Manor Residential Treatment Center.

John and Sharon moved to Park City, Utah, to enjoy long ski seasons and mountain biking and hiking in summer and fall. While living in Utah, John served as medical director of Cottonwood Treatment Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Later they returned to live in Onancock full time, where John practiced at the Wicomico County Public Health Department in Salisbury, Md., and worked for the Eastern Shore Community Services Board.

Throughout his life John enjoyed skiing, tennis, hiking, camping, and fishing with his family and friends. He enjoyed many outings in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and the Wasatch Mountains of Utah.

John was a longtime member of Little Fork Church in Rixeyville and of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Onancock.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sharon Fosque Snead; his children, Stephanie L. Snead, of Bel Air, Md., and John Peyton Snead V and his wife, Carol, of Portland, Ore.; his grandchildren, James, Mary, and Cara Juarascio and Ben and Ellie Snead; his great-granddaughters, Mia and Sophia Kirsch; and his nieces and nephew, Cassie Coates Robbins, Carolyn Lindsey Henderson, and Mark Lindsey, as well as their families.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Betty Snead Coates Lindsey, and his niece, Susan Coates Crossman.

A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Onancock on Saturday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m., with Father Ed Hunt officiating.
