Mr. Lawrence Hyden (Sonny) Stevens Jr., 88, of Townsend, passed away on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, at his home. Born on June 20, 1936, in Accomack County to his parents, the late Lawrence Hyden Stevens Sr. and Dorothy Hart Stevens, he grew up in Hacksneck.

Lawrence and his loving wife of 67 years raised four children. He worked on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel when it opened after joining on from the ferries until he retired for health reasons in the 1980s. Lawrence was a lifelong member of the Masons and was also a Shriner. He was also an avid hunter and loved deer hunting the most, along with fishing. He loved his animals and being outside. He was a friend to many people over the years and cherished those friendships.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Etta V. Stevens; his parents; brothers, Roland, Hyden, Johnny, and James “Jim” Stevens; his sister, Barbara Tilghman; and his daughter-in-law, Lois Ballard Stevens.

He is survived by his four children, Larry Stevens, of Cape Charles, L.T. Stevens, of Cape Charles, Lisa Allen (Glen), of Kissimmee, Fla., and Sherry Williams (George), of Newport News. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Nicole Stevens Cummings, of Cape Charles, Thomas Stevens (Ellen), of Exmore, John Barker, of Kissimmee, and Joel Stevens (Sarah), of Ellicott City, Md. He was also blessed to have six great-grandchildren, Thomas Ryan Stevens, Zachary William Stevens, Sophia Stevens, Benjamin River Stevens, Hannah Jane Stevens, and Luke Wyatt Stevens.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, at 2 p.m. at Capeville Masonic Cemetery with Pastor Shaun Smith officiating.
