Events commemorating the life and legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will take place on Monday, Jan. 20, on the Eastern Shore.
The Accomack NAACP chapter will host a memorial service honoring and celebrating King on Jan. 20, at 10 a.m., at Macedonia AME Church in Accomac.
The event will be followed by a walk to the Accomack courthouse green, where speakers including Rhonda Hall, the former Accomack County school superintendent whose employment was terminated late last year, will address the crowd.
The theme of Accomack’s event is “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice, and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence.”
The Rev. Calvin Washington, a member of the Accomack County Board of Supervisors, will give the keynote address at Macedonia church, according to a prepared release from the Accomack NAACP.
The memorial service also will include “songs, spoken word performances, (and) speeches from local students.”
“MLK Day is a day of service that encourages all Americans to volunteer in their communities,” the press release stated.
Those participating in the march should “bring a chair and dress warmly.”
Speakers on the courthouse green will include Accomack County School Board member Lisa Johnson, the Rev. Quintavion Washington, and the Rev. Milton Palmer Bunting.
In Northampton County, the Northampton County Branch NAACP and Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore will hold King Day events with the theme, “Together We Can Be The Dream.”
There will be a 9 a.m. broadcast on 103.3 WESR and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be free soup given to senior citizens at the Giddens Do-Drop Inn.
