Mrs. Lynn Butler Matthews, 70, of Chincoteague Island, passed away peacefully at her home on Dec. 20, 2024. She was born on July 17, 1954, to the late Norma Hancock Butler and Rupert Butler.
In her Chincoteague High School days, she loved basketball with a passion. Her team was undefeated (62-0) for four years and even made a spot in “Sports Illustrated” magazine.
She worked as a nurse for Dr. Amrien and then as a nurse at ECI. Later in life, she made a career move to selling insurance and then, before retirement, owned a stellar farm named Pony Pines Farm. There, she met people who would become like family.
Lynn had many hobbies during her life, from karate and motorcycle riding to becoming a leader of Hoofs by the Beach.
Lynn was a member of Union Baptist Church and a member of the Daughter of Ruth Sunday School class.
Her favorite hobby was attending sports events for her grandchildren, Todd and Lillie, especially softball and baseball games. She never missed a game, and even for the ‘away’ games she would always find a ride. She was so proud of her grandchildren.
Lynn leaves behind her husband of 49 years, Donnie Ray Matthews; her son, Aaron Matthews (Rhonda); her grandchildren, Todd Matthews (his fiancée Alexis Hale) and Lillie Matthews; her sister, Ruth Grundman (Bruce); her sisters-in-law, Lisa Duncan and Melissa Chance (Eddie); her brother-in-law, Rick Matthews (Laura Kerbin); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins,
She was predeceased by her brother, Kenny Butler.
A service was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 30, at Union Baptist Church on Chincoteague Island.
