Mr. Gene Franklin Simpson Sr. of Exmore, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock. Gene was born July 25, 1935, to Herbert L. and Madeline K. Langdon. Gene served during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Coast Guard as a radioman second class. He retired from the government printing office in Washington, D.C., when he then became the owner/operator of Simpson Printing in Exmore.
Gene was an avid singer/songwriter who played the guitar Chet Atkins-style. He and his wife, Betty, recorded music in North Carolina and Nashville, Tenn.
Gene is survived by his wife of 47 years, Betty Jane Simpson; four sons, Gene F. Simpson Jr., Barry K. Simpson, Henry Dean Carter, and Darrin L. Carter; a sister, Lorraine P. Edmonson.
He was predeceased by his son, Roger Neal Simpson; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clyde B. and Inez T. King.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. at Doughty Funeral Home with Pastor Jonathan Carpenter officiating. Interment followed at Belle Haven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shore Christian Academy, 36076 Lankford Highway, Belle Haven, VA 23306.
