Mrs. Nancy Carole Perry Lewis, 85, of Wachapreague, wife of the late Zadoc R. Lewis III, passed away on Nov. 18, 2024.
Nancy was born in Philadelphia, where she lived until she was 14 years old. Nancy and her family then moved to Baltimore, where she graduated from Towson High School. Nancy’s mother’s family was from Chincoteague, and that is where she met her best friend and husband of 63 years, ZR Lewis. Nancy and ZR lived in Baltimore for 20 years with their three children before moving to ZR’s hometown of Wachapreague and purchasing the Wachapreague Hotel.
Nancy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, as well as a friend to many. Nancy played an important role behind the scenes helping her husband run the family businesses, The Island House Restaurant and the Wachapreague Motel and Marina, for over 30 years.
When she was not busy working, she enjoyed traveling, family vacations, reading biographies, and completing her many sewing projects. However, Nancy’s greatest joy in life was “making memories” with her husband “Ran” and her family. Nancy loved to plan parties and family get-togethers for her children and grandchildren, whom she helped raise as her own. Nancy is remembered, even when she was ill, as having a smile on her face and a positive attitude.
Nancy was the daughter of the late George and Betty Perry, of Baltimore. She is survived by her son, Randy Lewis; daughter, Selina Coulbourne and husband, Mark; and son-in-law, Nat Atkinson, all of Wachapreague; and brother, George Perry, of St. Augustine, Fla. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Hannah Matias (Yariel), Samantha and Sawyer Coulbourne, Tres Atkinson (Mary), and Ciboney, Madison, and Charlie Lewis; and her great-grandchildren, Jordan, Hurley, Scarlett, Levi, Madyson, Oliver, and Aubree.
She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Susie Lewis Atkinson, grandson, Jared Atkinson, and great- grandson, Liam Matias.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m. at Doughty’s Funeral Home in Exmore, with Brooks Wallace officiating. Interment will follow in Wachapreague Cemetery. Family will join friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Hollies Baptist Church, P.O. Box 7, Keller, VA 23401.
