Mrs. Joan M. Hoover, 82, passed away peacefully into the loving arms of the Lord on Nov. 6, 2024, at her daughter’s home in Chesapeake.
Joan, affectionately known as Joani, was a beacon of kindness and faith, deeply involved in her community and her church. She was a member of Cape Charles Baptist Church and former member of Grace Church in Fredericksburg and Seventh Day Adventist Church in Loma Linda, Calif., and Porterville, Calif.
Her career in nursing began in 1973 in Porterville, and she later pursued her RN at Loma Linda University in 1984. Joani specialized in pediatric oncology and pediatric cardiac surgery. Her compassion and dedication to her patients were evident in her tireless commitment to her profession. She retired in 1997.
In the spring of 1996 Joani traveled to Israel on a Holy Land tour, where she met the man who would become her husband, Tom Hoover. They shared their love for the Lord and a passion to spread His word. Tom passed away in 2012, and Joani moved to Cape Charles to be near the bay and her family.
Joani’s hobbies included singing, playing the guitar, dancing, writing short stories, and sewing. A testament for her love for the bay, she cherished her mornings spent searching for sea glass along the sand in Cape Charles. Her involvement in her church and community was profound; she was often volunteering and helping others wherever needed.
Joani is survived by her children, Joey Mitchell and his wife, Robyn, John Mitchell, and Jackie Schuette and her husband, Patrick, along with her seven beloved grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Nov. 29, at 1 p.m. at Cape Charles Baptist Church, 509 Randolph Ave., Cape Charles, VA 23310.
Joani’s life was a testament to her faith and love for others, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Online condolences may be offered to the family at omanfh.com
